The Pupil Premium is a funding stream from Government which is provided to schools and is additional to main school funding. It is allocated according to the number of pupils on-roll who are eligible for free school meals (FSM), with a smaller amount being allocated according to the number of children of service families, and an allocation for each pupil who has been ‘Looked After’ (in care) for 6 months or more. In 2012, funding was extended to include pupils who have been eligible for free school meals within the past 6 years.

The intention is that schools decide how to spend the Pupil Premium as they are best placed to assess its most effective use in supporting the children most in need. Schools will then be held accountable for how the money is spent (e.g. by Ofsted and Governors) and from September 2012 there is a legal obligation to publish this information on the school website. The following is a summary of how much we gain through the Pupil Premium and how we use it at Earl Sterndale School.

Currently, 33% of our pupils qualify for Pupil Premium. This funding has been, and will continue to be, used to help fund our general Teaching Assistant hours whose time will be at least partly focused on assisting those children who add to our Pupil Premium funding. We also use the funding to provide valuable resources.
