In Key Stage 2 we aim to consolidate and extend the knowledge and skills our children have learned in Key Stage 1 to further foster their creativity and imagination.

We have developed a 4-year curriculum map which outlines how we will engage, inspire and challenge pupils to experiment with different forms of art and invent and create their own pieces of art. We also aim to help our children learn about a variety of famous artists from around the world, at different periods of history and from modern times.

Art and Design will also encourage our children to think critically and inventively, not just in Art and Design lessons, and to consider how Art and Design has helped shape our history, culture and wealth.

Aims

The National Curriculum for Art and Design aims to ensure that all pupils:

• produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences;
• become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques;
• evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design;
• know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Key Stage 2 Pupils should be taught to develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design.

Pupils should be taught:

• to create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas taking inspiration from a range of artists and situations;
• to improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting, photography, printing, crafting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay];
• to experiment with formal elements of Art and Design including colour, form, line, pattern, shape, shading, texture and tone;
• to evaluate their own work and that of their classmates in a constructive and positive way;
• about great artists, architects and designers in history and from modern times and their work and techniques.

There will be words and phrases that recur throughout the Art and Design curriculum and it is important that the children know what they mean and are comfortable using them. These words and phrases include:
