Curriculum - Infant Class

Challenge, enjoyment and creativity lie at the centre of our curriculum which is mainly structured thematically in order to offer interesting and immersive learning experiences for our children. These are underpinned by well sequenced learning activities in each subject area, with a strong focus upon the acquisition of discrete phonics, early reading and maths skills allowing each child to learn more and remember more each day in a fun and enjoyable environment.

Our children's learning is linked to two distinct curriculums, the Early Years Curriculum for our Reception pupils, and the National Curriculum for our Key Stage 1 (Year 1 and 2) pupils, but there are also frequent times when all children come together to learn.

Reception marks the beginning of a child’s school journey, where the foundation for lifelong learning is built. Our goal is to ignite curiosity and expand young imaginations, ensuring that learning feels limitless. Through play, children start to explore their surroundings, make connections, and form meaningful relationships. Every child deserves the best start in life, and we strive to provide a nurturing, positive, and enriching environment that allows each child to reach their potential and embrace learning as a lifelong journey.

In Year 1, children will be settled into classroom routines,  we foster a love of learning through a supportive environment and an engaging curriculum. With structured activities, children deepen their understanding of the world around them, setting the stage for a joyful and fulfilling school experience.

By Year 2, children are encouraged to take greater ownership of their learning, embracing increased independence, resilience and responsibility. Our broad, interactive curriculum supports each child’s growth and helps them thrive, preparing them for their next steps into the junior class and beyond.

Please see below to find out more about our learning themes for Year 1 and Year 2 throughout the year.

Opportunities for outdoor learning are carefully integrated into planned activities, with pupils able to access our outdoor space, as well as Forest School. We also have a school garden which pupils are able to access as part of their curricular activities and playtime experiences.
